Hey Everyone,
I am safe and sound in America and want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! As many of you have already seen me, I’m guessing you have stopped following this blog. If not, check out the next blog I will be using, which is going to involve a weekly sports new article about Denver. It will be better maintained come late january.
Happy Holidays,
Henry
Sports News
I just took a job working on as a staff writer at my school Newspaper, The Catalyst. While exciting, I will add that by no means is this a great feat. They were in need of another writer. I can write about whatever I want, so I think I’ll be doing weekly pieces on Denver Sports Teams. I will be pairing my articles with a sports blog (possibly by converting this one).
My advisor Steve...
Tibetan Migration
All of tumblr.com has already been blocked by the Chinese government, and (sadly) with only a week left in China, I think I can start giving everyone a better idea what I have been studying over the last month. Here is the abstract for my paper:
Abstract:
Though Tibetan nationalism is dwindling in Tibet (by Tibet I refer to the three provinces of Lhasa, Amdo, and Kham in China and...

Leaving Dali:
I arrived in Dali around a week ago and immediately entered culture shock. My hostel was filled with foreigners and everyone spoke English. Still, the hostel was very cheap and very nice, which encouraged me to stay there for the week. Still, I escaped the laowai enclave early and often, but only found more laowai walking the streets of Dali. I joke with Priscilla later that we were...

A Day in the Life of the Tallest White Boy in...
6:30 am - My alarm goes off:
I should be getting up to begin my training for mediation. Should be. (This does not happen every day)
6:35 - A French Voice Calls:
Agate, my French roomate also studying meditation with me, tells me in her very French accent that I should be joining her. This morning I get up.
6:37 - 20 prostrations, 3 repetitions of the refuge chant, and then Mediation:
During...

Traveling
I have been away from Kunming for about five days now, and I have weaving up and down and through the mountains of Yunnan. I’ll be posting mostly pictures and some stories about everything as I go.
Thoughts During My Homestay
Fall has arrived in Kunming. While the leaves are not turning like in New England and the first snowfall has not come like in Colorado, I still relaxed in my Jisujia (home stay apartment) with my Loomis Chaffee sweatpants and a mellanzana sweater on. Somehow, the rubber slippers that my family had given to me to wear around the house and read 中国制造 (made in China) matched the ensemble perfectly....
Day 7: Too many Tourists in Lijiang
Three Israelis, two Americans, and an Australia are all sitting at a Breafast table. While this sounds like the beginning of some sort of racist joke, this was the beginning of our day. Our discussion reminded me that I was becoming more and more accustomed to the Chinese Culture, particularly their bad table manners and lack of hygene.
After the quick bus ride that Paul paid for, we helped the...
Day 6: Sunny in Li Ge
With yet another tap dancing studio above me, I slept lightly and dreamt heavily. They started low and heavy and stayed low and heavy. I woke up with a lot to think about, but I felt taller. I was perturbed but well rested. Brent mentioned that he too had an odd sleep.
Apparently the Chinese couple in the café had gotten to us, because we succumbed to our first western breakfast. It was my first...
Day 5: DaLiuShui and Taking the Dirt Road
Someone was most definitely hosting a tap dancing lesson in the room above us. We begrudgingly woke, packed our bags, and ate a breakfast of Mantau and rice porrage. I took off my warm, clean, and jacket and jeans and changed into my light, stinky, muddy socks, long underwear, quick dry shorts, and an old WASABI jersey (shout-out to my ultimate frisbee team). I took off my hat and stretched my...
Lost in Translation (Explicit Content):
I need a break copying my written journal to a word document to I decided to shake it up a little bit.
Over the last few classes, I have compiled a few anecdotes about the joys of being an American in China and getting lost in translation. Please enjoy, but excuse all of the potty humor:
Story 1:
A SIT student asks the manager of a guesthouse in Chinese, “Can I sleep here?”
The manager is shocked....
Day 4: Re-inflated and Relaxed
The next morning I awoke to the loudest rooster I’ve ever heard. It was around 4 a.m. and what could only be a deranged rooster had a terrible sense of time. He continued to wake Brent and me up almost every hour following. We arose late again, despite this rooster’s best efforts, at about 8:30. We needed to get the bike fixed and were supposed to meet the Yellow Jacket lama at 8:00. He was not...
Day 3: Elated about getting Deflated
We awoke later than we had planned, a common theme on a trip that is supposed to be a vacation and exploratory all at once. We called Yun Qi, who advised us to come ride a boat with everyone from yesterday’s bus ride. We agreed, slid into some warm layers, as the weather was overcast and threatening rain, and met with our new friends. The legend goes that two Mosuo children were wandering through...
